The short answer: Mexico has exactly one town with real gay resorts, and that town is Puerto Vallarta. Everywhere else, Cancún and the Riviera Maya included, what you are booking is a gay friendly all-inclusive: a mainstream resort that welcomes you and does not build the week around you. Both are good trips. They are different trips, and most of the disappointment we hear about comes from booking one while expecting the other.
We host gay men's retreats in Playa del Carmen, on the Riviera Maya, so we spend real weeks in Mexico with twenty-plus gay men, and we have stayed in, eaten at or walked past most of what is on this list. This guide covers the gay resorts in Mexico by destination, names the ones that have closed and are still sitting in old guides, and ends with the question a resort search usually skips: whether a resort is the right booking at all.
How gay resorts in Mexico actually split
Three kinds, and the search results mix them up.
Gay hotels. Owned and run for gay men, in a gay neighborhood, with the beach, the bars and the other guests all part of the deal. In Mexico this exists in Puerto Vallarta and nowhere else at any scale.
Gay friendly all-inclusives. Big mainstream resorts, adults-only or not, that welcome gay couples and occasionally host a themed party. Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Los Cabos. More food, more pool, more space, and a crowd that is mostly straight couples and bachelorette parties.
A villa with a group. Not a resort at all. A private house, a chef, and a group of gay men who came for the same reason. That is what we run, and it belongs on this list because it answers the question most people are really asking a resort to answer, which is whether they will be around their people.

Puerto Vallarta: the only real gay resorts in Mexico
Puerto Vallarta is on the Pacific coast, in the state of Jalisco, and its Zona Romántica is one of a handful of neighborhoods in the world where the gay beach, the gay bars and the gay hotels are all within a ten minute walk of each other. Every property below is in or just above that neighborhood.
Almar Resort. The one people mean when they say "the gay resort in Mexico." Adults-only, gay by design, and the only gay resort on the beach itself, at Playa Los Muertos, with the Mantamar beach club attached. If you want to walk out of your room and onto the gay beach, this is the only property that does it.
Blue Chairs Resort. The original. It has sat on the south end of Los Muertos, on the stretch of sand that became the gay beach, for longer than most of the guides that list it. Rooms are simpler than Almar's and the rooftop bar is a Puerto Vallarta institution.
Casa Cupula. A boutique hotel on the hill above the Zona Romántica, open for more than twenty years, with a pool club, a gym and a restaurant on site. Quieter than the beachfront pair, and the one we would pick for a couple who wants a pool to themselves in the afternoon and the bars ten minutes downhill at night.
Piñata PV. Men-only, with a clothing-optional pool. Small, sociable, and exactly what it says it is.
The Tryst. The luxury boutique option, in the building that used to be the Abbey. Not on the beach.
Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta. Not a gay hotel. A large mainstream all-inclusive that gay couples recommend to each other, for when you want the resort to be the vacation and the Zona Romántica to be a taxi ride away.
Closed, and still in old guides: Hotel Mercurio, the classic budget gay hotel for years, closed in 2024. Villa David closed in 2023. If a list you are reading names either as a place to book, the rest of it is probably out of date too.
The honest summary of Puerto Vallarta: the specific hotel matters less than people think, because the neighborhood does most of the work. Pick by beach access and budget, and spend the difference at the beach clubs.

Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum sit on the Caribbean coast in the state of Quintana Roo, which recognized same-sex marriage in 2012, a decade before the whole country did. The welcome is real. What is not there is a gay resort. The hotel zone is a strip of large properties separated by taxi rides, and what happens inside your resort is most of what happens on your week.
These are the ones gay couples keep recommending to each other, and why:
Temptation Cancún. Adults-only at 21 and up, topless-optional, and deliberately loud. Themed parties every night and a crowd that came to drink. If you want a party resort that will not blink at two men, this is it. If you want to sleep, it is not.
Secrets The Vine and Le Blanc Spa Resort. The quiet, polished, adults-only end. Both get recommended for gay couples on a honeymoon or an anniversary, both are about the spa, the dinner and the view, and neither has a scene of any kind.
Royalton CHIC. Adults-only, central, and the one Cancún resort that runs LGBTQ+ themed events during the year. The closest the hotel zone gets to a gay night.
Secrets Akumal. South of Playa del Carmen, adults-only, swim-out suites on a quieter beach. The pick for a couple who want the all-inclusive machine without the Cancún noise.
Book any of these as a couple and you will have a good week. Book them alone hoping to meet gay men and you will have a beautiful, quiet week. That difference is the whole reason the next two sections exist.
Playa del Carmen: where we stay, and what is honestly there
Playa del Carmen is an hour south of Cancún airport, a walkable town rather than a hotel strip, with Fifth Avenue running a block back from the beach. It is where we run our Mexico retreat, so here is the straight version.
The gay scene is small and it moves. Club Playa 69, the town's only gay bar for years, has closed. Provenza is the gay bar now, with drag shows and go-go nights, and the Reina Roja hotel runs occasional pool parties. Mamitas Beach is where gay men end up on the sand. That is the whole list, and any guide with a longer one is out of date.
Hotels. There is no gay hotel. The Illusion Boutique Hotel is the unofficial one, a two minute walk from the beach and from Fifth Avenue, with the most gay guests. The Hilton Playa del Carmen is the adults-only all-inclusive on the beach. Hotel the Palm is the small, central, good-value option. All three are fine for a couple.
What we do instead. We take a villa. Our Mexico retreat runs December 2 to 7, 2026 and March 19 to 24, 2027, six days and five nights, in a private villa in Playa del Carmen with a chef. Mornings are resistance training at the gym with a coach. Afternoons are the reason you came to this coast: a private yacht day with an open bar and snorkeling, a cenote swim in the jungle, and the Mayan ruins at Tulum. Evenings are dinner as a group of twenty-plus gay men. Fifth Avenue is there if you want it and irrelevant if you do not.

Same-sex marriage is legal in every Mexican state, and has been nationwide from late 2022, after the Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that state bans were unconstitutional. The tourist states got there earlier: Quintana Roo in 2012, Jalisco in 2016. Mexico City had it from 2010.
On the ground, in Puerto Vallarta's Zona Romántica, the Cancún hotel zone, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, two men holding hands is unremarkable. Mexico is also a Catholic country with conservative towns, and the same rule applies as everywhere we go: tourist zones and big cities are easy, small inland towns are where you might get a look. The safety worries people actually bring to us about Mexico are rarely about being gay. They are about the headlines. Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Puerto Vallarta are among the most visited destinations in the Americas, the tourist zones are heavily policed, and the ordinary advice applies: registered taxis, no wandering drunk at three in the morning, phone in the front pocket.
A resort, or a villa full of gay men
Here is the pattern from the discovery calls we take every week. Men search for gay resorts in Mexico because they want a week where being gay is the default, where they do not have to read a room, and where the other guests are potential friends rather than a honeymoon at the next table. A gay hotel in Puerto Vallarta delivers that. A gay friendly all-inclusive in Cancún delivers a beautiful week and leaves that part to chance.
The villa answers it differently. Everyone in the house applied for the same reason. Most of our guys arrive solo and most are first-time international travelers, so nobody is the odd one out on either count. The coaching gives the week a spine, the yacht day and the cenote and the ruins give it stories, and the group chat does not die when everyone flies home. It is not the right booking for a couple who want to be left alone, and we say so on the call.

Our honest pick
If you want gay resorts in Mexico in the literal sense, go to Puerto Vallarta and book Almar if the beach matters, Casa Cupula if quiet does. If you want an all-inclusive and you are a couple, Cancún and the Riviera Maya have better value and better hotels, and you should pick Temptation or Secrets by the week you want rather than the brochure. If you are going alone and the point is the people, a resort is the least reliable way to get that in Mexico, and a villa with a group is the most.
